    The city has great chances of becoming a premier tourist town, advantaged by its geographical position right: the mountains, natural dam near Lake Red Lake (25 km) and 60 km from the resort is mine. The resort can ski in Spring Mures (20km), or you can visit Borsec (approx 50 km).


    This is the first valley crossed by the river Mures. Gheorgheni city is crossed from east to west by Belcina River, a tributary of Mures, extending along its east-west in the same direction. The town is at an altitude of 810 m.


Even in the 13th century it was a settlement round the György brook. 1607 it acquired the right to hold fairs. 1637 a significant number of Armeninan people settled here, who in 1687 joined the Roman Catholic Church by conducting their ceremony. 1716 the town was ruined by the Tatars. 1719 the plague devastated the region. 1808 the town was ravaged by a fire, 700 houses were burnt to ashes. By the 19th century it became the commercial centre of the region, after the 70ies there were built factories. By the end of the century it developed the present town centre. By 1907 it became a town. 1944 the town hem was ravaged by a fire. Its first high school was opened in 1908, its building was finished in 1915. 1910 among its 8905 inhabitants, 8549 was Hungarian, 155 Romanian and 115 German. Until the Peace Treaty of Trianon it was the centre of the Gheorgheni district in Ciuc county.

Red Lake

Lacu Roşu, health and holiday resort in Harghita county, Romania. It is a climatic resort situated 28 kilometres from its magisterial centre Gheorgheni, in the valley of the Bicajel creek, between the Suhardul Mic, Suhardul Mare and the Ucigaşul mountain. The main sight of the resort is the Red Lake, of which pinewood stumps stick out. Its name comes from the name of the Ucigaşul mountain (Killer mountain), which rises above it, and maybe refers to a murder, or it may refer to the dangerous paths, which lead to the mountain. Its romanian name Lacu Roşu (Reddish lake) comes from the reddish alluvia deposited in the lake by its main tributary-Pîrîul Roşu (Red Creek). The lake was formed by a rock slide, as a rockfall closed the way of the Bicajel and Roşu creeks. The lake lies at 983 m altitude, its maximum depth is 10 m. It is one of the most picturesque lake of the Carpathians, which is surrounded by high cliffs (1000 m).

Sugau Cave

Sugau Giurgeului Cave is located near the tip of the Lonely Stone and the southern slope of Mount Sipos ( 1568 m ) . Cave Creek Şugău coming Heveder flows into streams , which in the eastern part of the Gheorgheni Basin flows into the river Mures and Borzoka . The cave is accessible from Voşlăbeni town , which lies on the road connecting Gheorgheni and Miercurea Ciuc. Heveder left the village , 6 km on a trail called Feketerez follow Heveder creek , brook Borzoka then after a walk of 300 m reach Şugău creek .

Lázár Castel

Lázár Castle ( Hungarian Lázár -kastély ) is a castle built in a combination of Romanesque , Gothic and Renaissance while located in the municipality Lazar, Harghita County , Romania . Fortress named Lázár family who built it. Stephen IV Lazar , county seat of Ciuc , Gheorgheni and Casin was the one who demolished medieval manor located on the property , building a broader building reusing some parts of the old building . The oldest body of the building dates from 1532 , the remainder being added between 1631 to 1632 . Cousin Prince wanted from the beginning a residence worthy of a prince to express the influence of life politico- administrative Principality and managed to illustrate this aspect by construction details : monumental staircase , the bastions decorated with inscriptions and coats of arms and cornice painted Renaissance style .


Gheorgheni (in Hungarian Gyergyószentmiklós, in German Niklasmarkt) is a town in Harghita county, Romania. It is the centre of the former Gheorgheni district. The Red Lake belongs to this town. The town lies 59 km away from Miercurea Ciuc, northwest of the Békény brook, at the eastern part of the Gheorgheni basin. The first part of its name is the continuous form of the hungarian gurog (= greek verb), from this developed the görgő, then gyergyó, but it can have the sens of Gyergyjó (=György river), which was earlier a name of a river. The second part of its name is the name of the Szent Miklós church.
